Top Tools For Gelliprinting

Using the right tools when creating art makes a big difference on the outcome of your piece. As much as I love experimenting, it can sometimes be disappointing when you've worked hard on a piece, only for the final print to turn out completely different than what you intended because of the tools you used. To limit this from happening, I've researched different tools that help me get the closest to my desired print.

Here Are The Right Tools To Make The Process Fun

• Amsterdam Acrylic Paint - the best quality paint for transfers on paper

• Texture Tools - this can be things like bubble wrap, lace, stencils, etc.

  • This is where collagraph printing comes in. A collagraph is a print made from a textured plate built with layered materials. Traditionally, when run through a press, these textures not only transfer their shapes but also emboss into the paper, giving the print a raised, tactile surface. Using similar objects on a gelliplate allows you to echo this technique without needing a press, relying instead on pressure from your hands or brayer.

• Bristol or Mixed Media Paper - hold up well to multiple layers of paint, capturing both fine details and bold textures

• Fabric and Wood - if you want more functional pieces such as wearable art, bookmarks, wall decor and more

Each of these tools supports a different part of the creative process, helping your ideas translate cleanly from plate to final print. Most importantly, gelliprinting invites you to think outside the box of traditional printmaking. Experiment with everyday objects, unusual surfaces, and anything that sparks curiosity. The gelliplate has a way of turning the ordinary into something magical!
