Why Art Should Be Fun and Not Intimidating

Art is not meant to be something inaccessible to the masses and strung up in a museum in France that the average person will never be able to see - it of course could be that, but art is ultimately an outlet for self expression and doesn’t have to be perfect. In fact, some of the most iconic works of art aren’t. Art is about trying new things and learning how to make it better when it doesn’t go according to plan, and that is very easy to do in gelliprinting workshops.

Think of these workshops as a place to unwind and disconnect from work, school, or social media and allow yourself to create and experiment! Don’t worry about making mistakes - this place encourages you to make them, or to learn from them.

Simple Tips from Kaili

  • Work with 2-3 colors and textures for your first prints

  • Avoid using a paintbrush

  • Do not go into this trying to control the outcome

  • Let yourself try different things

  • Let this be messy and chaotic

  • Use your own meaningful objects to make prints

  • Prioritize making marks rather than creating a figurative image.

In this workshop, you don’t have to think so much – just do. Gelliprinting itself removes you from the concept of perfectionism: there is no right or wrong (unless you injure the gelliplate!) Making art is for you to feel good, not judged, and that makes the gelliplate a perfect medium to do it through.

In honor of teaching workshops online and in different states this month, please listen to the song of the week: What Dreams Are Made Of by Hilary Duff (my fav).

With Love,
